Randy Johnson, a black fifteen-year-old sophomore from a poor, single-parent home discovers that he can teleport himself. Kelli Jones, a white sixteen-year-old junior from a well-off family, has precognitive and other visions. The two get together because of their paranormal abilities and become very close. To meet a need, Agent Bill Forrester of a US intelligence agency recruits Randy for his ability. Randy accepts due to an unfortunate legal situation, even though he must leave his family and Kelli. A pregnant Kelli runs away to be with him.
